Glitter Jars

I've seen these jars all over Pinterest the last couple of months or so, sometimes called "mind jars" and sometimes called "calm-down jars", and thought they might be a fun craft to make with the girls.  (Okay, okay, so I'm totally dating myself here, but they remind me of the plastic glitter wands from the 80s and I really wanted to make one for myself.)   Basically, mind jars are a tool to help kids, or anyone, when they feel overwhelmed.  They are clear jars (either glass or plastic) that are filled with a solution of liquid and glitter.   The glitter represents all the troublesome thoughts that are creating the stress.  They are shaken to mix up the glitter and as the glitter settles to the bottom, you are supposed to visualize the things that are troubling to you also settling.

A note about Pinterest: when I pin things on Pinterest, I really try to click through to make sure that I'm linking to the original post so that the original blogger gets the credit (although sometimes it is hard).  

As far as I can tell, the post Meditating with Children on "Still Life with Circles", is the first post I can find about the jars.  It refers to the book, Moody Cow Meditates that has a recipe for the jars in the back.  There are also a couple of lovely, later posts on Mind Jars and Calm-Down Baskets at "Here We Are Together", which actually describes a different method of making them than from the book.  The first couple we tried to make failed miserably.  In one, we added the big, fat (cheaper) glitter and it, literally, settled in about 10 seconds flat.  Not what we were looking for.  In the second container, we added Elmer's White Glue, which turned it into an opaque mess.  Also, not what we were looking for.  So, a few days later, after looking at the different recipes and thinking about the science behind what makes them work we decided to make an experiment out of creating the glitter jars.   

(I'm talking about the science of the jars here, not the science of meditation - I'm definitely not qualified to talk about that because I haven't been at all successful with meditation.  The closest I get to stilling my mind is in my yoga class - and I haven't been there nearly enough lately!)

Materials Needed:
  • jars - we used half-pint glass mason jars
  • glitter - the fine stuff
  • hot water
  • whisk
  • bowl
  • light corn syrup and/or glycerine (found in the pharmacy section)
  • glitter glue
  • dish soap

Edible Slime

I warned you that I'm slightly crazy about Halloween (just wait until I share my costume for this year!) so the Halloween-themed activities continue... This week we're working on making slime.  Traditionally, and with older kids, I've made slime with the classic combination of Elmer's glue and Borax.  However, because of the ages of my girls, I decided to seek out some alternative recipes for a safer, "edible" (but not necessarily tasty) slime.  I couldn't decided between a couple of recipes, so we're going to have a "Slime-Off" and each girl will make one of them and then we'll compare them to declare a slime winner.

Materials Needed:
Slime 1:
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp soluble fiber (i.e. Metamucil)
  • pint-size container with top (we used a salad dressing shaker, but you could also use a mason jar or a plastic food container)
  • food coloring (optional)
  • flavoring (optional)
  • microwave
  • microwave-safe cereal-size bowl
  • plate or large bowl
  • spoon
Slime 2:
  • 1 tbl cornstarch
  • 1 14-oz can sweetened condensed milk
  • food coloring (optional)
  • small saucepan
  • large plate

Slime 1 Directions:
After making both several times, I think Slime 1 is the more child-friendly slime to make and has a truer "slime-feel" to it.  To start, add the soluble fiber to 1 cup of water in the container.  Add 2-3 drops of food coloring - it will get darker as it cooks so don't go overboard on the food coloring.  Secure the top and have your child shake the container for about one minutes.  Pour the mixture into the microwave-safe bowl and cook in the microwave on high for 1-4 minutes, or until the mixture starts to boil.  When it starts to bubble vigorously, stop the microwave and stir the mixture.  Cook for another 1-2 more minutes and then stir again.  Repeat 3 to 4 times.  You will know when you are getting close when you stir the mixture and lift up the spoon and the slime makes a thick tendril leading all the way back down to the bowl, as shown in the picture.  Once you get to that stage, you can stop there if you want a more liquid slime or cook for another 1-2 minutes if you want a stiffer slime.  Spread the slime into a large bowl to cool - be careful because it will be very hot!

Slime 2 Directions:
This slime is a little more difficult both because it requires the use of a stove top, which makes it difficult for young children to be involved, and also takes more time.  To make this version, stir together the cornstarch and the sweetened condensed milk in the small saucepan.  Place over low heat.  The mixture will become thinner as it heats and then start to thicken.  It took us about 20-30 minutes, but it depends on the relative heat of your burner and the type of pan that you use.  I noticed that the mixture next to the sides of the pan started thickening first.  You can take it off at that point to have a thinner slime or cook it a little longer to thicken it up a bit more.  I left one batch on for about 10 more minutes and it became the consistency of a very thick butter cream frosting - not very slimy in my opinion!  Spread the slime onto a large plate to cool - be careful because it will be very hot!

Now the fun part!  Give your child a sample of both of the slimes and let them play with them for a bit.  It is helpful at this point to have a big bowl of soapy water and a hand towel easily acceptable for them to clean themselves up.

Once they are finished, have them draw a picture of the slimes in their science journals as well as observations about each of the slimes that they made.  Finally, ask the child to assess which recipe made the "better" slime in their opinion and have them justify their answer.  The both liked the fiber-based slime better - they described it as "cold", "like jello", and "slimy".  The condensed milk based-slime was "squishy", "oozy" and "gross".

Make sure to dispose of the slime in the trash as it can wreak havoc on pipes!

What's Happening?
Slimes are a great examples of a class of molecules called polymers.  Polymers are long chains of molecules that are often cross-linked together to form a unique substance.  The resulting substance often displays the characteristics of a non-newtonian fluid, like we discussed earlier with the oobleck experiment in that the viscosity changes depending on how much force is applied.  The substances are also often very stretchy because the cross-linking acts as miniature springs holding the long chains together.  Polymers are found both in nature and are man-made.  Common examples of polymers are rubber, nylon, bone, plastics, styrofoam, silk and, my favorite, Silly Putty!

Extensions:
Play with quantities of ingredients and cooking time.  You can also substitute ingredients - we ended up using a sugar-free Metamucil left over from my first pregnancy five years ago.   I am very curious about what would have happened with a regular version of it.  I also feel like gelatin should work, but haven't tried that yet.  Please let me know if you do try it or find a recipe!

There are also a huge variety of slime recipes collected at About.com, many of the edible versions have variations on the types that we made. For example, chocolate slime can be made by following the directions to Slime 2, but adding 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup and increasing the cornstarch to 1 1/2 tablespoons.  Apparently, you can also substitute tonic water in the recipe for Slime 1 and the end product will be a slime that glows under black light due to the quinine in the tonic water.

Rainbow Milk


Rainbow Milk is a relatively new experiment to me.  I was first introduced to it via a Facebook post of a friend who was complaining about the fact that it didn't work which, of course, made me curious.  If you haven't seen this experiment before, essentially blue, red and yellow food color is dropped in a triangular shape in a bowl of milk.  Dish detergent is then added to the middle and the food coloring starts to move across the milk, creating rainbows.  The reasoning behind it is a bit complicated (I'll talk more about it later), but for young kids its a great way to explore a little about what makes up milk.    You could also talk about rainbows, color combination and surface tension - all in one small experiment!

Materials Needed:
  • liquid food coloring
  • bowls (the wider the better)
  • liquid dish detergent (Dawn works well)
  • cotton swabs
  • small bowl for holding dish detergent
  • a few types of milk (we used skim, 2% and heavy cream)

Oobleck!

Welcome to our first experiment! This is an old standby of mine; I first did it when I was teaching Comprehensive Science at Newark's Arts High School right after I graduated from college. It was at the beginning of the year and we were talking about the phases of matter. I wanted something to capture their interest (and messy things tend to do that!) and also where we could discuss some of the basic principles of science investigation. (At that point, I didn't have any textbooks so I was flying a bit by the seat of my pants, but that's another story.) The kids loved it; the janitorial staff, not so much (although I tried to make it up to them later with baked goods).

So, yes, this experiment is messy, very messy. There are a few ways to modify it so that the mess is limited but just be forewarned. And, as always, emphasize to your kids that nothing in the experiment should be eaten! (In this one, these are all basic kitchen items, but uncooked rice is not a fun thing for little tummies.)

Materials Needed:
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 3+ tablespoons water
  • spoon
  • food coloring (optional)
  • plastic sandwich bag (optional, this is one of the ways to reduce the mess level!)
  • plastic cups (I bought a sleeve of cups at the grocery store that I plan to wash and reuse for other experiments but you could also use your regular kitchen cups or bowls, although it is a bit better if they all look the same)
  • a variety of solid and liquid kitchen items (I chose three liquids (grape juice, water and oil) and three solids (sugar, beans and rice))
  • science journal
